Earlier this year, I attended a continuing education lecture in which the speaker said, “friends don’t let friends go to the emergency room or instacare for eye emergencies.”  Why would he say this?  In short: high cost, lack of equipment, and limited training of care providers. It’s no secret that a trip to the emergency room or instacare facility will result in significant bills.  And, to make matters worse, with respect to eye health, many emergency rooms and walk-in clinics do not have the equipment necessary to diagnose and treat eye injuries, such as a slit lamp (biomicrosope).  Many an optometrist or ophthalmologist would likely question the thought of a healthcare provider attempting to diagnose an eye concern without being able to look at it up close under high magnification…

Why should I wear safety glasses?

Warnings advising people to wear safety glasses can be found all over–the jobsite, employee training manuals, instruction manuals for power tools, or in instruction booklets for assembling a simple piece of furniture, to name a few.  Why are these warnings so commonplace?  Do they really matter? Our doctor’s response: First of all, the cornea, the clear dome on the front of the eye, is typically only about 0.5mm thick, about the thickness of 5 sheets of paper.  If the cornea gets perforated, fluid can leak out and lead to blindness in a very short amount of time. If the cornea does not get perforated, it can still get scarred or otherwise disrupted which can lead to blindness, reduced vision, or a painful condition called a recurrent corneal erosion.
